This 220,000 square foot, four-story ARUP Building #4 is designed by Architectural Nexus as part of the National Laboratory Enterprise of the University of Utah Research Park and its Department of Pathology. Located at 500 Chipeta Way, Research Park, it’s primary purpose serves as an open lab for new changing technologies enabling practice of medicine at its highest level. Most of the space within reserved for automated specimen processing via conveyor systems. Also included in the facility’s design is a cooling tower, generator facility, and loading docks. The civil site work by Meridian included demolition plans of an existing facility, utility design, storm drain master planning, and associated parking areas and roadways for the entire ARUP campus and coordination of proposed facility with the existing infrastructure of the other existing ARUP buildings.
Special Project Consideration: Environmental stewardship was applied to ensure that laboratories can operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week without disruption. The electrical heating and ventilation guarantee immediate backup if a system goes down. The project required proper ventilation, which is critical to maintaining specimen quality and employee safety. Environmental efficiency is obtained from the HVAC system as it pulls hot and cool air out as it is cycling fresh air into the building, then reuses the hot or cool air, thereby saving overall costs to the owner. Other features include xeriscaping to minimizes water usage, recharging stations for electric vehicles, and plenty of natural light and views from high energy windows.
