Summary
5600 West is a major trucking route in West Valley City, Utah that was lacking the capacity to meet current and future demand was initiated by UDOT to widen roughly three miles of 5600 West from 2100 South (SR 201) to I‐80 from two to five lanes to improve traffic flow.
Meridian was responsible for preparing the survey and right of way documents while working with Michael Baker International. In order to produce survey mapping for 3D design, the entire 3.2 mile stretch was scanned terrestrially using LiDAR. This process took 13 days and 934 scans to complete. Topography was extracted from the collected scans, including features such as 3D signal poles and billboard signs. Railroad areas were scanned for safety without risking personnel being on the tracks. This data was used for the design of the expansion of the roadway and the installation of a flyover bridge at the railroad crossings. The crossing is heavily used by Union Pacific Railroad.
Meridian worked closely with stakeholders to create right away design to ensure a smooth and fair acquisition process. The roadway design includes adding center turn lane, curb and gutter, drainage improvements and updating traffic signals. New sidewalks and bike lanes were added on both sides of the road. The project is expected to provide numerous benefits to the community including reduced traffic congestion, improved safety for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists and increased economic opportunities for bordering businesses. The project was funded through a combination of state and federal funds and recently completed construction by Wadsworth Brothers Construction.
