School of Music Building Construction is finishing nicely.

By Project Progress

The New School of Music on the Provo Campus includes four levels of space for academics, practice, recitals, and 1000 seat vineyard-style concert hall with optimal acoustics and lines of site. The building will be the new home for approximately 450 music majors to expand the production of their art.

Meridian Engineering, participated as part of the architectural engineering design team led by HKS Architects for the civil, site, and utility design, tunnel expansion, plaza, and outdoor seating areas, accessibility, site grading, and drainage, erosion control plans, utility connection plans, site circulation, drop off areas and parking, and stormwater on-site collection systems. In addition, Meridian’s survey crews provided site staking layout for the building and site construction. Currently, the facility is under construction by Big-D and is slated to be complete winter semester 2023.

Meridian survey crew chief, Mo Sykes, initiated this project with a design topography survey of the stadium area prior to the proposed turf installation for the football field and track re-surfacing.  Our civil engineering team used the survey data to overlay the play field design elements. Following that design phase, Heather Butler, survey crew chief, returned for construction layout and one last verification of the surface to ensure the football field is ready for turf to be placed. This verification is part of our process to confirm the required accuracy of the new field is achieved for the proposed turf.

Meridian survey crew travels to Garfield County this week to gather existing bridge structural data for future replacement.

By Project Progress

Meridian’s LiDAR manager and Professional Land Surveyor, Brian Boehmer, gets the credit for these crisp clean views while surveying the existing bridge structure over Henrieville Wash and SR-12 just northeast of Henrieville, Utah. The goal with gathering these scans will be to create 3D CAD models of the existing structure for use by the roadway and structural design teams.

To accomplish this activity, Meridian scanned both existing structures utilizing terrestrial LiDAR methods – LiDAR = Light, Detection and Ranging. The use of remote sensing technology is used to provide a detailed point cloud and subsequent 3D Model of the existing structures to expedite design workflows for the team.

In Brian’s words, “The best part of field work away from the office is the wonderful views and landscapes. Being in an area with no cell service is a close second!”

DNR North East State Park campground and day use projects are progressing nicely.

By Project Progress

Meridian’s civil engineering team is working with the State of Utah-DFCM, and the Department of Natural Resources to finish four separate recreation projects cohesively. These projects consist of Jordanelle Reservoir’s Rock Cliff RV and van campground and Ross Creek day use area improvements, Rockport Reservoir’s Cedar Point new day use area, and a new campground at Deer Creek Reservoir along with waterski boat improvements.

Construction for each site is slated to begin this spring. Deer Creek, Ross Creek and Rockport construction are expected to be complete during the fall of 2022. Rock Cliff is scheduled for completion fall of 2023. These expanded areas are anticipated to enhance recreational activities at each of the reservoirs for years to come while meeting local public demand for camping and day use activities.

An update on the extension of UTA Frontrunner commuter rail northward.

By Project Progress

UTA Frontrunner from 2nd Street in Ogden to Forest Street in Brigham City will be extending over 20 miles and required research on over 220 parcels impacted by right of way takes and easements.  Beginning in 2018 after a ridership study, the project’s design has progressed nicely, along with clearing the corridor for rail construction. This construction is forecasted to start approximately 2040.

The extension will serve those growing communities for commuting toward business activity without deteriorating air quality and while reducing heavy traffic on I-15. Once complete, it will greatly improve mobility to this area.

Meridian Engineering services include a survey control network expansion, supplemental topographic surveys, defining the existing right of way, GIS web mapping – which also won an IRWA award this year -and prepared plans and documents for right of way acquisition. Meridian is working on corridor preservation acquisitions for UTA and WSP is contracted to complete the acquisitions through November 2021.

As a beneficial part of this project scope, Meridian developed a right of way status tracking web map (as shown) to provide the project team with a way to coordinate the acquisition efforts. This map displayed the status of each parcel, ownership information, and direct access to project plan sheets. Meridian is thankful to the UTA team for having us on this project. We look forward to more similar opportunities in the future.
