One of Meridian’s survey crews spent the day in Little Cottonwood Canyon April 5th, 2021 creating monument corner records for a few monuments Salt Lake County did not have data on per Utah State Code 17-23-17.5. Meridian survey crew chief, Mo Sykes, (shown) is actually standing in the hole dug to expose a monument for GPS observation.
Crew safety was a bit tricky while working on other nearby sloped sites at this scenic location west of Alta Ski Resort. For a site like this, only certain times of the year are feasible to work. Typical winters in Utah have too much snow and the avalanche dangers are high, requiring beacons, shovels, and probes -avalanche safety gear. However, with this spring’s substantial warm period, the avalanche danger was reduced, and shovels and GPS equipment sufficed. You can tell this was a fun outing for Meridian’s field crew.
