East Sandy’s new liquor store #52 is now open!

By Completed Project, Project Progress

This project is comprised of remodeling an existing 14,600 SF empty building in the Little Cottonwood Shopping Center next to the Home Depot. Located at 9400 South and Highland Drive (1880 East) this store provides an alternative location to purchase cold beer, wine, and spirits.

Inside its modern design includes a retail area feature with local products made in Utah, remodeled space for retail sales, storage, an office, conference room, restrooms, breakroom with lockers, a stock room, and an enclosed shipping/loading dock. A geometric design ensemble of elements and wall art characterize the interior and exterior architecture for improving a customer’s long lasting shopping experience.

While working with the Jacoby Architects design team, Meridian provided a utility survey and topographic survey for the new entrance’s site design. In addition, civil site design for the utility plan, trench drain, and the shipping/loading dock and truck access were provided. Construction period services were also included in the civil design scope.

Meridian and SLC Department of Airports Collaborate to Map Project Site

By Project Progress

As the surveying and base mapping sub-consultant working under prime consultant, HNTB, Meridian field crews and office staff have been working with Salt Lake City Department of Airports on one of the most complicated topographic surveys in Meridian’s 25-year history. Extensive coordination has been required between the airport’s project management and operations teams, HNTB staff, and the FAA to fly inside active airspace over the project site with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to gather Aerial LiDAR and Aerial Imagery without disrupting plane flights.

This project was a remarkable culmination of coordination, teamwork, and patience to facilitate the UAV flight missions, while avoiding peak aircraft flights and bad weather conditions such as wind and snow during a record-breaking Utah winter 2023. By using every tool in the toolbox, including digital levels, robotic total stations, GPS, sonar for bathymetric surveys, terrestrial LiDAR, airborne LiDAR, and some all-around technology savvy field crews coupled with knowledgeable office personnel, Meridian has completed a product to meet the design teams needs and ensure the project meets all regulatory requirements. Base mapping efforts of the project are complete.

Once the project team has progressed the design to a point of substantial completion, Meridian staff will create legal descriptions and vacation documentation for the next stages of development.

Have you been to the new Jeanne Wagner Jewish Community Center Activities Center and Outdoor Athletic Complex yet?

By Project Progress

This new Activities Center and Outdoor Athletic Complex addition for Salt Lake City’s Jewish Community consists of a two story 10,000 square foot facility providing both an outdoor and indoor place for kids to enjoy awesome activities from basketball and volleyball to fitness classes and even summer camps. It is nestled in at the north of the existing Jewish Community Center at 2 N. Medical Drive -north of the UU campus.

The final product is designed to fit into a sloped site by ajc architects and serves as structurally sound and modern sleek environment with natural light and open spaces. Construction by United Contractors.

The civil engineering design provided by Meridian included demolition plans of existing Tennis Courts for the new facility, utility design for new water and sewer services, site grading and stormwater management plans to connect existing infrastructure and consolidation of property and preparation of utility and access easements.

2023 UCLS Conference – the gathering of Utah’s all-star surveyors.

By Events

This year’s annual Utah Council of Land Surveyors (UCLS) Conference, was held February 8-10, 2023 at the Dixie Center in St. George Utah. The conference theme was “Being an All-Star Surveyor” which was widely attended and included several professionals from Meridian Engineering. The conference is organized for Survey professionals to stay current with best practices, the latest laws, and preview the newest technology for the profession.

Meridian’s right of way and survey teams were happy to be involved throughout the conference, comprised of break-out sessions of key industry topics such as standards and ethics, eminent domain, business practices for surveyors, understanding utility easements, public roads and private lands legal discussion, and discussion on the future of surveying and mentoring the next generation.

Some of the big highlights and accolades that occurred at the conference impacting our firm:

Brad Mortensen awarded UCLS Lifetime Achievement 2022

Meridian’s QA/QC Manager Brad Mortensen, PE, PLS was honored with the 2022 UCLS Lifetime Achievement award. Brad received the award based on his volume of service to the Land Surveying Profession over his lifetime in the profession, including past-chairman of the Utah Council of Land Surveyors, current UCLS ad hoc Committee Chairman, developing the 2022 State Plane Coordinate System into existence for Utah with the NGS, was instrumental in developing the 2015 and the 2017 update of the UDOT Surveying and Geomatics Standards Manual, and is the current Treasurer to the Executive Board of the Utah Council of Land Surveyors. Brad is also an adjunct instructor in the Salt Lake Community College Surveying Program where he teaches Control Surveys to the future generation of surveyors.

A new remote-controlled survey robot called Anymal made an appearance. Check out this little drone doggy from Switzerland. https://photos.app.goo.gl/4rQyKnB3BRXmz9fL9

Presented by keynote speaker, Jay Seymour.

After the conference, a small group from Meridian, including spouses, was able to gather for dinner at the Anasazi Steakhouse with long-time Meridian colleague, Bryan Westover of HDR and his wife Jennifer at the rear, Darryl and Wendy Fenn, Tyler and Cass Baron, and Mike and Sheri Nadeau to the front. It was a unique experience. You order your entree including swordfish, steak, or salmon and it is brought out on a hot stone to finish cooking to your liking along with your separately plated meal.
The volcanic rock is heated up to 600 degrees in a special oven for 6-8 hours and then placed onto special design stoneware plates that withstand the heat. Entrees were followed by a chocolate fondue including toppings like marshmallows, apples, pineapple, pretzels, cheesecake, strawberries, grapes, rice krispy treats, creme puffs to “dip” in the melted chocolate!
Five crowns game with Chuck from ESI and his wife at the Edge Grand Desert Resort. In the middle are Bryan Westover of HDR and his wife Jennifer.
Another group outing including Meridian’s Travis Daley, the Baron’s, the Westover’s and the Fenn’s playing Bingo.  The gals found a really old bingo set at an antique store in St. George along with some booby prizes for the winners like Slim, a barbie potty, a whoopie cushion, a magic towel, and a crossword puzzle book. It was another fun night at the resort lobby.

Jennifer Westover and Wendy Fenn

The last day Friday, Jennifer and Wendy hike in Snow Canyon and enjoy the sunshine while the boys finish the conference.  They said it was wonderful!

Overall, our team looks forward to this annual event for receiving professional development credits, gaining extra knowledge regarding the profession, and networking with like-minded surveyors from Utah. Recharging in the St George sun is always an added benefit!

Meridian is loving its M300 drone’s ability for achieving high accuracies over large areas at a relatively low cost to clients.

By Project Progress

Meridian Senior UAS Pilot Freeman Marble, sUAV FAA part 107 remote licensed uses new drone technology for mapping a local project west of Salt Lake City of the existing area for future design and construction. M300 technology coupled with a P1 camera and Rock Robotic LiDAR sensor can efficiently classify raw point cloud data using Photogrammetry and LiDAR into actionable data sets for engineers and architects to use as a base for design documents.

These processes even help with transportation-related projects as it assists with the pavement inspection process by identifying utility markings in the road without the danger of being in the travelled roadway. It can scan to identify panels of concrete, walls, and bridges that need to be replaced or repaired while maintaining pilot safety from roadway and traffic.
