BYU Heritage Halls Complex

Summary

Meridian Engineering provided comprehensive civil design services for Phases 1-5 of this BYU housing community designed for full time day continuing students. Our scope included creating a Master Plan and overseeing the grading and utility plans for the new buildings’ infrastructure.

Site Design:

  • Included 15 new apartment units, each with 180 to 220 units, constructed over three phases.
  • Phases 2 and 3 were subdivided into additional bid packages, enabling two different contractors to work simultaneously, thereby accelerating the construction schedule.

Challenges Addressed:

  • Relocated several existing utilities to accommodate the building sites while maintaining existing services to surrounding facilities on campus.
  • Mitigated moderate grades across the site using various wall, tunnel systems, stair systems, and ramps.
  • Ensured access for service vehicles and fire lanes.

Utility and Access Design:

  • Phased utility construction to maintain service to campus utilities while new systems were installed.
  • Designed a pedestrian-friendly vehicle system with limiting parking to the exterior of the building complex.
